Description

Sony PlayStation Dual Frequency Oscillator (DFO) Mod Kit

Sony PlayStation Dual Frequency Oscillator (DFO) is a dual clock mod designed for the PlayStation. It outputs both a PAL console GPU clock and an NTSC console GPU clock which switches automatically depending on the region of the software being run. Designed so the console has a more accurate and stable clock when the video refresh rate is switched between 50Hz and 60Hz as compared to running region modified consoles in non-native video refresh rates. It adds an extra layer of compatibility for modern TVs and up-scalers when forcing none standard console regions.

Unlike the Sega Saturn, Sega Mega Drive, and Sega Master System, for instance, the PlayStation’s video refresh rate is controlled by software and not by the hardware. This means that when a PAL game is loaded the console will output a 50Hz signal and when an NTSC game is loaded the console will output a 60Hz signal. However because of the way video systems work in different regions, the console’s GPU clock in PAL and NTSC consoles is not the same.

An NTSC console running a PAL game in 50Hz is not the same as a PAL console running a PAL game in 50Hz. Because of the different GPU clocks, the NTSC console will show a discrepancy in clock speed when running 50Hz software as compared to a real PAL console. The same is true when the two regions of console run NTSC games in 60Hz. The PAL console will show a discrepancy in clock speed as compared to a real NTSC machine. The Dual Frequency Oscillator fixes this by providing both regions of GPU clock.

Colour Over Composite Video

A DFO will produce the correct subcarrier frequency for colour over composite video in PU-8 and PU-18 consoles. These console revisions generate the correct subcarrier in the GPU which is sent out to the video encoder.

A DFO will not produce the correct subcarrier frequency for colour over composite video in PU-20 and PU-22 consoles. These consoles require a MFO or MOFO to supply the correct subcarrier for the video encoder.

3.3V SMD Dual Frequency Oscillator

This low profile 3.3V SMD DFO is perfect for bottom mount PlayStation installs. This is the absolute best PlayStation Dual Frequency Oscillator available.

I ordered this for my SCPH-5501 (PU-18), an NTSC console. My collection is mostly PAL, and I wanted the image to look correct. On both my PAL and NTSC TV, PAL games were monochrome. Had this DFO shipped to my parents house in the UK, picked it up on a recent trip and just installed it now I am back stateside. Installation was a breeze, though use of a heat-gun is recommended for the big shield you have to remove to get to the resistor you need to take off. Installing the chip using the install guide was simple and took about 10 minutes. The DFO works flawlessly, the game displays in correct colour and speeds on PAL/NTSC games on both my PAL and NTSC TV’s respectively. Solid purchase, simple install and at a really good price.

Perfect !! Installed on a PU-18 PAL system.
